On-Track track team members are primarily involved in preventing incidents and cleaning up after they happen. There are a number of different jobs covered by the on-track team.
Incident Officers:
The Incident Officer (IO) is the chief marshal on a corner and leads a team of flag and Fire/Incident marshals. It’s the job of the IO to report erratic or dangerous driving, any obvious mechanical problems with a car and/or other factors which could lead to an incident. During incident clean-up the IO takes control and reports back to Race Control what assistance or further action is required.
Flag Marshals:
Information and instructions are communicated to drivers by flag marshals via flag signals. Flag marshals are also expected to observe driver behaviour during incidents while other members of the team are busy.
Fire/Incident Marshals:
The job of the Fire/incident marshal is to take action to clean up problems such as oil spills or debris, before they cause a full scale incident. If an incident does occur, their job is to return the circuit to a safe condition, as quickly as possible.
Fast Intervention Crews:
Fast Intervention vehicles attend incidents to remove stranded cars and help with incident clean-up's. This happens during live racing, safety car periods and following race stoppages.
